ECP Spotlight: Introducing The Addiction Psychologist Podcast

Did you know that SoAP has an official podcast, called The Addiction Psychologist, hosted by us?

The podcast is designed to provide a platform for clinicians, researchers, and policy makers in the field of addiction to highlight relevant work, answer questions, and disseminate information to enhance treatment and recovery.

We wanted to create a mechanism for passive learning on these issues. So much of academia is active learning through reading, taking notes, etc. With everything going on in the world today, we are busy enough. Thus, we aimed to add to the addiction education landscape an option where you can learn while you do the dishes or clean up around the house. An option that you can pause if something important happens in your world, and you can pick back up when the time is right. We also wanted to amplify the voices of junior investigators and translate science for the various community stakeholders. Specifically, at the end of every episode we have our guests distill the content of that episode into brief take home messages for individuals in recovery, practitioners, policy makers, and those from underserved communities.

The podcast initially launched in June, 2020 and we have recorded six episodes which can be found on the SoAP website and all your favorite podcast sites, such as Spotify and Apple podcasts. Episodes are released twice a month. Our main episodes are released at the beginning of the month. During these episodes, we meet with addiction professionals and discuss their work. Then, at the end of the month we release our student episodes. In these episodes, we amplify the work of SoAP student members as well as discuss issues around training in addiction psychology.
