Full Description:

In the inaugural seminar of the SAMHSA-funded Recovery Science Series organized by the Recovery Research Institute, Dr. John Kelly will discuss the science and practice of recovery support services. During the past 50 years, the addiction field has learned a great deal regarding the etiology, epidemiology, typology, phenomenology and acute care treatment of substance use disorders. In the last 20 years, the field has learned even more about how people with substance use disorders achieve remission and stable recovery. This knowledge has pushed the field to understand more about how to shorten the time to full remission and stable recovery, which has led to critical findings on recovery capital. This session will describe the emergence and growth of recovery support services, which have helped people with substance use disorders to build recovery capital, mitigate biobehavioral stress, and enhance their chances of remission. This session will explain the state of the science on recovery support services, concentrating on how they may be combined with clinical care to improve treatment outcomes.
