Postdoctoral Fellowships in Addictions Research, Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research, McMaster University/St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton

The Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research (PBCAR) at McMaster University/St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is inviting applicants for postdoctoral fellowships in addiction research.  The fellowships are to gain expertise in translational addiction research that seeks to understand the etiology and optimal treatment of addiction.  Fellows will work closely with the Centre’s faculty to gain new skills and develop their personal research programs.

Newly funded grants will support 3 new fellows with the following foci:

  1. The effects of the COVID19 pandemic on substance use and mental health
  2. The impacts of legalization on cannabis and other substance use in Canada
  3. Using brain imaging to understand addictive disorders

Applicants may be considered for multiple foci or overlapping training experiences.

The PBCAR is a partnership between McMaster and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.  The Centre is directed by Dr. James MacKillop and has more than 20 faculty affiliates with diverse research interests. Conditions of interest include substance use disorders (particularly alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco), gambling disorder, and obesity/food addiction. The PBCAR has a number of collaborative clinical projects and has partnered with several clinical programs at SJHH and at Homewood Health Centre. Opportunities to contribute to clinical research collaborations will be available.

Eligible applicants will have completed a PhD (or equivalent) degree, with training in psychology, behaviour analysis, cognitive neuroscience, behavioural genetics, or related fields.  Successful candidates will be intellectually curious, highly motivated individuals who work well in teams. Fellowships are for up to two years. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The PBCAR is located at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, with a satellite location on campus at McMaster, both in Hamilton, Ontario.  Hamilton is a major hub in the ‘Greater Toronto Hamilton Area’ and is known for high quality of life and low cost of living.  Hamilton has a vigorous economy, a vibrant arts community, outstanding restaurants, affordable housing, and hundreds of acres of conservation lands and national gardens.  It is also part of the GO Train system for commuting from nearby municipalities, including Toronto. Virtual options are available in light of COVID-19.
