POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

Brown University School of Public Health

Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies

Center for Addiction and Disease Risk Exacerbation

DEADLINE March 1, 2021

The Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies is administrative home to a newly funded NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). This $12 million, 5-year grant, has established the Center for Addiction and Disease Risk Exacerbation (CADRE) beginning August 2019. Our thematic focus is on the relationship between substance use and chronic disease. With the implementation of the university-wide diversity and inclusion action plan, and the recruitment of faculty with interests addressing disparities in vulnerable populations, we are seeking to recruit a postdoctoral research associate with interests in addressing substance use issues, particularly tobacco, in high risk, low SES vulnerable populations, especially in racial and ethnic minority populations. The postdoc program is fully funded for at least 5 years. The postdoctoral research associate will primarily work with one or a team of the following faculty comprising the leadership of CADRE. Peter Monti, PhD (PI and Director), Jasjit S. Ahluwalia, MD, MPH (Deputy Director) and Jennifer Tidey PhD (Core Leader). Opportunities to participate in ongoing studies, new pilot studies, work on team grant writing, and write one’s own grant are available.

CAAS research includes laboratory studies of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use; clinical trials testing behavioral and pharmacologic interventions; studies of intervention mechanisms (using electronic diaries, cue reactivity, behavioral economics, and analysis of therapeutic process variables), alcohol/HIV research, and tobacco regulatory science. CAAS currently has over 60 research grants focused on alcohol and other drug use, representing nearly $11.2 million in direct costs per year.

The postdoc research associate will join the robust training platform of Brown’s renowned T32 programs in substance use funded by NIDA and NIAAA (https://www.brown.edu/public- health/caas/postdoctoral-training-program). This includes structured didactic seminars, supervised research experience, manuscript writing (first and co-authored papers), and an intensive mentored grant writing process. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and reviews will continue until positions are filled. Start dates are flexible. Position comes with employment benefits, including health insurance. Salary is commensurate with federal NRSA stipend levels, and funds are available for conference travel.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (in a relevant discipline, including, but not limited to, public health, behavioral sciences, psychology, and sociology) at the time the appointment begins. This is a two-year position. Applicants should send a cover letter stating research interests, past experiences, and a curriculum vitae to Dr. Ahluwalia with the subject heading “postdoctoral research associate application.” If further information is needed, or there are specific questions, please contact Dr. Jasjit S Ahluwalia at cadre-postdoc@brown.edu. The Brown University School of Public Health is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and actively solicits applications from women. and minorities. Funding contingent on NIH prior approval.
